Forest Valley got together at the beginning of December to introduce our new character education theme for the month. After viewing a short video of the "Robin Hood Gang" giving out surprise gifts to people in their community, it didn't take us long to figure out that our new theme is "The Art of Giving and Receiving". We're sure to be hearing a lot of people saying "thank you very much!" this month.

NOVEMBER CHARACTER ASSEMBLY: EMPATHY
Forest Valley E.S. held it's monthly character assembly today on Monday, November 1, to introduce the theme of "Empathy". Empathy is when you understand how someone else feels in a certain situation. Your very own student coucil acted out a skit that demonstrated empathy. Awards were also presented to students for showing October's character trait, "Appreciation".

THE THING I SAW LAST NIGHT
The students in Ms. Mackie's class read the story "The Thing I Saw Last Night". It is a story about an imaginary creature that a boy dreams about when he sees lights in the sky. Here are some connections we made to the story:
This reminds me of when I was four. I thought that there was a monster under my TV but it was just the sounds of the TV. - Saytouna
This reminds me of when I was starting to go to sleep. I thought I saw a furry paw. It was just my dad! That's a relief! - Kyra
I remember when I was in my bed and I thought that there was a monster under my bed. It was actually my toys, so I moved to my sister's room. - AbieWhen my mommy asks me to go get something from the furnace room in the basement I do not like it because there are no lights in the furnace room. It is scary because the wind blows on the door and it closes. There are two little red lights and it looks like red monster eyes. But it is really just two red lights. When I come up I am proud of myself. I now know that there is no monster in the furnace room.
PS: As for the red lights, my mommy screwed them out. - Matthew
Once when I was going to my bed I thought someone was in there. So I though I could jump on it. And then I checked and it was just my pillow. - Zohaib
This reminds me of when I opened the closet in my room and I thought there was a ghost in it. My mom came in my room and said there is no ghost. It is only shadows. - Hunter
This reminds me of when I was going to bed and I thought there was a big scary monster in the closet. So I called my mom. She said there was nothing. - Eden

HOW DO YOU SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION?
The student council journalists hit the school yard on Wednesday to ask this question: "How do you show your appreciation? What are you thankful for?" Here are just some of the responses we heard:
Will shows his appreciation by giving hugs, saying "you're awesome!", and by saying "thank you".
Audrey thanks people, accepts what's given to her, and greets people.
Ms. Fife congratulates people, and says "thank you".
Anna shows appreciation by respecting her friends, by not littering, and by saying "I love you" to her mom.
David appreciates the school and his friends.
